I'm constantly distracted by all things Supernatural, Doctor Who, Buster Keaton and anything else randomly geeky. Here to share my art and find things that inspire/distract me.
The opening of the Akeley Hall of African Mammals in 1936 marked the birth of the golden age of the diorama. Named for Carl Akeley—the naturalist, explorer, and Museum taxidermist—the hall showcases large mammals of Africa.
At the center is a freestanding group of eight elephants, poised as if to charge, surrounded by 28 vivid habitat dioramas. These provide a glimpse of the diverse topography of Africa and its wildlife, from the Serengeti Plain to the waters of the Upper Nile to the volcanic mountains of what was once the Belgian Congo.
One of my favorite parts of the museum.
Just wandered around in here this morning before we opened! It’s so peaceful when it’s empty.
Also, Carl Akeley was pretty interesting himself.
Robert K. Golka Tesla Coil 51 Feet wide Vs model aircraft for Lightning…
This was done in my hometown in the late 1970’s, inside of the hangar that once housed the Enola Gay during WWII.
(The hangar was listed as one of Americas 11 most endangered historic places in 2009. It is currently being restored. To follow the restoration go here x )
From my understanding, Golka experimented with ball lightning and replicated machines from Tesla’s notes.
"…in 1970, I organized Project Tesla and tracked down Tesla’s diary of 1899 to the Nikola Tesla Museum in Beograd, Yugoslavia. From Tesla’s notes I was able to build the closest replica of Tesla’s high voltage machine, recreating the fireballs, and even exceeding the power output of it. From that point, 10 years of research with limited out-of-pocket funding, has emerged a full-blown fireball thermonuclear fusion reactor concept."
